Genesios was a one-time Avtokrator of Videssos. He overthrew Likinios and, after a six-year reign, was in turn overthrown by Maniakes.
Genesios became the ruler of the Empire of Videssos after Likinios made the army winter north of the Astris River and refused to pay his soldiers. When the rebellion was over, Likinios was dead, and the army crowned Genesios Avtokrator, even though he was not of noble blood.
At first, the new Emperor had wide support, because Likinios taxed his people to the point of poverty. But this support was lost with the people Genesios started murdering his opponents, beginning with Likinios, who was forced to witness his sons tortured and killed before being killed himself. Genesios then ordered the killing of everybody connected with Likinios, his relatives and anybody who worked under. Soon, the paranoid Genesios started killing anybody who he thought was plotting against him, legitimately or not.
To make matters worse, Genesios refused to work with administrators or help in fighting the Makuraners or Kubratoi who were attacking his empire. Every year of his six-year reign saw thousands rebelling against him. The way he dealt with captured rebels just made more people rise up, further worsening the Empire's situation.
Geneosis was defeated in civil war by Maniakes and killed after he was caught trying to escape. Before he was executed, he asked Maniakes if he thought he could do any better, and Maniakes did not know.
