Gaius Suetonius Paulinus was a Roman general in the first century. He was governor of Britannia from 58 to 61, and he is best known for defeating Boudicca's Iceni Revolt.
Surviving records reflect that Suetonius was a Consul of the Roman Empire in AD 66. After the death of Nero, Suetonius was a general and adviser to eventual emperor Otho, who reigned only a few months in AD 69. However, Suetonius's final fate is unknown.
Gaius Suetonius Paulinus in Ruled Britannia[]
Gaius Suetonius Paulinus was a prominent character in William Shakespeare's play Boudicca, the play which spurred the English people into overthrowing their Spanish occupiers in 1598. In the final scene, he kills the captured Boudicca, but not before being awed by Boudicca's prophecy that some day another great queen will arise in Britain--a clear reference to Queen Elizabeth.[1]
