Chief Petty Officer Fremont Blaine Dalby, US Navy, commanded a twin Bofors 40mm anti-aircraft gun on the USS Townsend. His loader was Petty Officer Fritz Gustafson. In 1941 George Enos Jr. joined his crew as a shell jerker.
Dalby survived the sinking of the Townsend in 1943 off the coast of Baja California.
Dalby's parents were devoted Republicans, a rarity. He was named after both John C. Frémont and James G. Blaine. His friends supposed it a blessing that his name did not include Lincoln, one of the most disgraced Presidents in United States history.
