Harry Turtledove: Index > Names of countries

I think we need to set a firm policy in place with regards to countries that have gone through one or more name changes in their history. Right now, its pretty hap hazard. We have an article under "British Guiana" (now "Guyana", but usually still under its former name in HT works), but we also have Suriname (previously called "Dutch Guiana" in OTL, and still called that in one HT work). We have Thailand, not Siam, but we also have Ceylon, not Sri Lanka. And then we have an article for both Indonesia and Dutch East Indies, respectively, although they are indentical for our purposes.

So I think we need to set something in stone. My preference is to go by their present OTL names, with notes in the introduction stating that "In most HT works, 'X' goes by its former name, 'Y'." TR 15:10, October 14, 2010 (UTC)

You know, I had thought that just recently. You're right, it is a problem. And I agree that modern names make more sense; we can always make redirects when HT uses an old name. Turtle Fan 19:40, October 14, 2010 (UTC)
Rhodesia, Burma, Spanish Morocco, Malaya, and the ones identified above: I believe that's all of them, or at least that's all I can think of at the moment. There's both Manchuria and Manchukuo, but that's more a defunct country. Mao sliced the region up into multiple provinces and stopped referring to it as Manchuria; I don't remember what the name is now. Turtle Fan 19:54, October 14, 2010 (UTC)
