Harry Turtledove: Index > Capital of Atlantis

Ok, so we now have an inconsistency with the capital. In LA, the capital is New Hastings. However, in "Audubon in Atlantis" and in "The Scarlet Band", it's Hanover.

The main inconsistency is in AiA, since it is set before LA. TSC is easy enough to hand-wave (they moved it after LA, for some reason). For purposes of our article, it's kind of a PIA, since we have to say "Hanover was the capital in the 1840s for some reason, but New Hastings was the capital again by 1852, and then back to Hanover in the 1890s."

On the plus side, I am relieved to discover that I hadn't just made up the fact from hazy memories of the short stories that Hanover was at some point described as the Atlantean capital. TR 19:11, January 30, 2012 (UTC)

I noticed that as well when I read the stories last year. It didn't seem worth trying to untangle.
Multiple capitals are not entirely unknown to history. South Africa has three, if I recall: The legislature meets in one city, the executive does business in another, and the judiciary sits in a third. Atlantis doesn't have separation of powers, mainly because its constitution was written by retards. That fact can work to our advantage, however: Say the retards wrote in a requirement that the capital rotate or something. Turtle Fan 16:37, January 31, 2012 (UTC)
