Fort Mahan, named for former President Alfred Thayer Mahan, was the main U.S. Army depot in Columbus, Ohio prior to Operation Blackbeard. After the Confederates captured Columbus, Fort Mahan was made their main administrative Army center for operations on the Ohio front.

In late 1941, Tom Colleton managed to get four days leave which he spent mainly inside Fort Mahan, since Columbus residents were unhappy with the occupation.
