Turtledove

Two elderly Scottish brothers ran a fish-and-chips shop on Laurel Canyon Highway outside New Liverpool, beside the local Independence Party offices. After Colonel Thomas Bushell of the Royal American Mounted Police finished interviewing Morton Johnston, the Party Chairman, he decided to have his luncheon at the shop.

The brothers knew their business. The fish was red snapper rather than cod but fried in batter just firm and wrapped in newspaper along with a generous helping of golden-brown fried potatoes. After eating, Bushell reflected that the two would be on their way to being wealthy if they had set up shop downtown rather than the backwater that they had.[1]
