Fand was a Trokme woman who was mistress to a war chieftain. Because he was abusive, she killed him and ran away from her own people.
Fand later came to Castle Fox, where she lived in a polyandrous relationship with Baron (later Prince) Gerin the Fox and his man-at-arms Van of the Strong Arm. She was violently jealous of rivals for the affection of either man, and expressed her discontent by throwing projectiles such as crockery. When Prince (later King) Gerin married Selatre, Fand had to resign herself to the new arrangement, and married Van.
The two had a daughter named Maeva and a son named Kor. Van and Fant were unfaithful to each other on a regular basis, and quarreled violently. Yet they dearly loved each other, and this violence was simply part of their marital landscape. Gerin found this difficult to understand, but as they were happy with it, he did not bother them about it.
