The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is an agency of the United States Department of Homeland Security, initially created by Presidential Reorganization Plan No. 3 of 1978 and implemented by two Executive Orders on April 1, 1979. The agency's primary purpose is to coordinate the response to a disaster that has occurred in the United States and that overwhelms the resources of local and state authorities.

FEMA in Supervolcano[]

After the Yellowstone Supervolcano erupted, FEMA did what it could in the extraordinary disaster including establishing a number of refugee camps at the outskirts of the ashfall.[1] The camps stretched from Iowa to Louisiana on the east side of the eruption and from Washington state to California on the west. They were given patriotic sounding names: Camp Constitution, Camp Independence, Camp Federalist, and Camp Liberation.[2]

Vanessa Ferguson ended up in Camp Constitution, between Muskogee, Oklahoma and Fort Smith, Arkansas.[3]
