Ewa was the daughter of Warsaw druggist Witold. She was anti-Soviet, like her father. One day in September 1952, Vasili Yasevich, a White Russian who'd joined up with a group of Polish rebels led by Major Casimir, presented himself in the store. He and Casimir had entered Warsaw to pick up supplies from Witold, but Casimir had been recognized and killed. Yasevich shared his bizarre life story with Ewa, who decided no MGB man would create such a stupid, unlikely story, and so gave him shelter.[1]

Yasevich went to work for Witold, and even sharing some of the knowledge he'd acquired in China. Ewa began developing feelings for him. At night, she endured constant Soviet aerial bombardment, and then the Red Army's shelling of the city came in short order. As the uprising began to break, the Soviet government promised amnesty to anyone who pledged loyalty to the Soviet Union. However, the Soviets moved on 26 October, and subdued the city. Yasevich and Ewa had gone to a Catholic church to hear a firebrand priest named Karol Wojtyla when the invasion began, and the two managed to escape with their lives.[2]

By December, Warsaw was firmly under Soviet control. Ewa convinced Yasevich to stay, and the two admitted they had some feelings for each other.[3]
