Evan Thursday was the man whom private detective Tom Trencher was hired to shadow. Before long, both Trencher and Thursday were found shot to death. The killer was probably Gina Tellini, Thursday's rival in the hunt for a Maltese elephant which had been shipped to San Francisco.
