Eugenius was Tribonian's majordomo. When Tribonian returned home from Italy, Eugenius assumed Tribonian had been miserable amongst "dirty" and "barely civilized" people. In truth, Tribonian had been impressed by how clean and sophisticated Italy was after the reforms of Martinus Paduei, and was now frustrated by the comparative filthiness of Constantinople. However, Tribonian saw no reason to try to convince Eugenius of the truth.[1]
Eugenius stole from Tribonian for the four years Tribonian was in Egypt. When Tribonian returned, he realized Eugenius was panicked. Since Eugenius hadn't stolen too much, Tribonian didn't have him arrested.[2]
