Eric Bishop was the game warden in Grants Pass, Jefferson. In November 1980, Grants Pass local Greg Donovan pulled a fabled speartooth salmon out of the Rogue River, and immediately told Bishop. Bishop in turn informed Governor Bill Williamson on Election Night, 1980. Bishop had to work hard to convince Williamson that Donovan was telling the truth; the speartooth was officially extinct and had passed into myth. Based on Bishop's sincere tone, Williamson decided to make the trip to Grants Pass.

In the meantime, Bishop took pictures of the specimen before Greg Donovan and his wife Kelly Ann Donovan cleaned it. The Donovans ate part of the fish, but kept most of the meat on ice, along with the innards and the skull. When Williamson arrived in Grants Pass with ichthyology professor Mervin McDougald, Bishop escorted them to the Donovan house for an inspection of the remains.

After reviewing the remains, McDougald concluded that the specimen was not Oncorhynchus rastrosus, but rather an offshoot. Williamson then began to prepare for the inevitable press conference, which included gathering the photos Bishop had taken and as well as more samples of the specimen for the trip back to Ashland.

A few days later, Bishop attended the conference announcing the discovery. His wife, Vicky also attended, watching from the press room.[1]
