Eloise Granche was a resident of Rivière-du-Loup, Republic of Quebec. She was a Canadian before the province was made into an independent republic by the United States. She lost her husband Philippe to a train accident in the late 1920s. Philippe had been a drinker, and Eloise maintained an air of calm years after his death.[1]
In 1935, Eloise Granche entered into a relationship with Lucien Galtier, a farmer living near Rivière-du-Loup, after he asked her to dance.[2] He courted her throughout the following months, before it became physical,[3]and exclusive. Galtier made several half-hearted proposals of marriage which Granche turned down, reasoning that formalizing thier relationship would only complicate inheritances on both sides.[4] Galtier's family approved of the relationship.[5] In January 1941, their relationship ended on a tragic note when Galtier died of a heart attack post-coitus.[6] She became somewhat reclusive after the incident.[7]
