Elmendorf Air Force Base (IATA: EDF, ICAO: PAED, FAA LID: EDF) is a United States military facility in Anchorage, the largest city in Alaska. Originally known as Elmendorf Field, it became Elmendorf Air Force Base after World War II, and in 2010 it merged with nearby Fort Richardson to form Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson.
Elmendorf Air Force Base in The Hot War[]
Elemendorf Air Force Base was destroyed by a Soviet atomic bomb on February 7, 1951. This attack came in response to the USA's destruction of the Soviet base at Pechenga three days before.[1] The destruction of Elemndorf was particularly galling as President Harry Truman had ordered Alaska be on alert.[2] The Soviets flew well below radar, and moreover painted their Tu-4s to look like B-29s.[3]
