Edwin Durrell was regarded as one of the world's foremost experts in medieval English history. In the days preceding a world conference in this field in 1991, Durrell stopped by Canterbury for a visit. While there, he met the American graduate student Jennet Walker, and was impressed by her specialised knowledge. Durrell offered her a job as his secretary while he oversaw an archaeological expedition at York's Abbey of St. Oswald. She considered it a grand adventure and accepted the offer.
