Edwardsville is a town in Cleburne County, Alabama, United States. At the 2000 census the population was 186.
The town came into being in the early 19th century, when gold was discovered in the area. When gold was found in California, Edwardsville busted.
Edwardsville in Southern Victory[]
Lieutenant Colonel Jerry Dover wound up in Edwardsville for a brief time in 1944, just after Atlanta fell to the U.S. He found Brigadier General Cicero Sawyer in Huntsville more cooperative than those he had dealt with in Atlanta but Sawyer had less material to ship. As he explained, anything manufactured in Virginia or the Carolina was being shipped north to the Richmond front. Ammunition he had since it was made in Birmingham but boots and raingear were hard to come by.
The supply depo was so insignificant to the war effort that U.S. bombers didn't bother dropping their loads when they overflew it on their way to Birmingham.[1]
