Down in the Bottomlands and Other Places (published 1999 by Baen Books) is a collection of three novellas. The title story, Down in the Bottomlands by Harry Turtledove, concerns an alternate history where the Straits of Gibraltar did not open up in the Miocene, leaving the Mediterranean Sea a sub-sea-level desert. The other two novellas, "The Wheels of If" by L. Sprague de Camp and a sequel "The Pugnacious Peacemaker" by Turtledove, concern an OTL lawyer thrust into a parallel world where Vikings colonized North America.
