Domenico Pacelli was a Catholic priest, and the Corrector of the Aquinas Seminary in Rome. About 60, with pinched cheeks, a thin sharp nose and pale bespectacled eyes, Pacelli resembled a scholar and was quite well educated. Yet he was uncompromisingly rigid in his devotion to the Aquinist doctrine that progressive, modern Islamic culture was evil. He shared this position with Maghribi agents Khalid al-Zarzisi and Dawud ibn Musa. Throughout the meeting, al-Zarzisi remembered a series of attacks Aquinists had carried out throughout the years. They promised they would do everything in their power to stop the Aquinists, and then took their leave.[1]
In the aftermath of the assassination of Cosimo III, Grand Duke of Italy, his son and successor, Lorenzo III had Pacelli arrested. Lorenzo secured Pacelli's cooperation by threatening to destroy every Aquinas Seminary in the Grand Duchy.[2] He was made to walk in the march at Cosimo's funeral as a hostage for his followers' good behavior.[3]
That plan didn't work. When Cosimo's coffin reached the Pantheon, Aquinists who'd mingled with the mourners opened fire with automatic weapons.[4] The Italians guarding Pacelli blamed him and immediately shot him to death.[5]
