Deptford is a district of South-East London, England, located mainly within the London Borough of Lewisham and partly within the Royal Borough of Greenwich. Formerly part of the county of Kent, Deptford was annexed to London in the 20th century. From the mid-16th to the late 19th century, Deptford was home to Deptford Dockyard, the first Royal Navy dockyard. In 1593, playwright Christopher Marlowe was murdered in Deptford.

Deptford was the reported destination of Christopher Marlowe after his flight from London in 1598. Lope de Vega's regiment searched there for Marlowe with no luck, but de Vega had a pleasurable visit to Eleanor Bull's inn where he discussed theatre with Sheriff Peter Norris.[1]
