The Denver Post Semipro Tournament was organized in the 1920s by The Denver Post in an effort to create a World Series of semipro baseball. The tournament featured several invited teams, usually ten in number. In the 1930s, Negro League players began to participate. Satchel Paige, among other luminaries, played to some fanfare. The tournament ended in the 1940s.
Denver Post Semipro Tournament in The House of Daniel[]
The Denver Post Semipro Tournament took place in Merchants Park, Denver, Colorado in June of 1934.[1] Over a dozen teams played, including the House of Daniel.[2]
In the end, the House of Daniel (with Carpetbag Booker in their lineup) went up against the Pittsburgh Crawdads in the finals, which consisted of three games over three days. The Crawdads won the first game (June 21), 5-1, but the House of Daniel won the next two games, and thus the series overall.[3] Unfortunately, the final ceremony was cut short by the outbreak of what came to be called the Great Zombie Riots of 1934.[4]
