Delaware

Delaware is a state located on the Atlantic Coast in the Mid-Atlantic region of the United States. The state is bordered by Pennsylvania to the north, New Jersey to the northeast, Maryland to the south and west, and the Atlantic Ocean to the east. The state takes its name from Thomas West, 3rd Baron De La Warr, an English nobleman and Virginia's first colonial governor.

Delaware was one of the 13 colonies that participated in the American Revolution and on December 7, 1787, it became the first state ratify the Constitution of the United States of America, thereby becoming known as "The First State".

Delaware in The Guns of the South

Delaware remained part of the Union during the Second American Revolution.

During the 1864 presidential election, it and neighboring New Jersey were the only two states which Independent candidate George McClellan was able to carry during his unsuccessful bid for the presidency. The state had three electoral votes during the election.

Delaware in Joe Steele

Delaware was one of the several states that voted for Republican candidate Harold Stassen in 1948. Nonetheless, Joe Steele won his fifth term by a wide margin.

Literary Comment

In short story "Joe Steele," Delaware is one of the six states to vote for incumbent President Herbert Hoover in the 1932 election (the other five states were Connecticut, Maine, New Hampshire, Pennsylvania and Vermont). That election is not described with that level of detail in the novel.

Delaware in The Two Georges

In the aftermath of the Seven Years' War, Delaware was one of a number of colonies that chafed under unrepresentative direct British rule. However, a new arrangement was peacefully negotiated forming the North American Union. Thus, Delaware was one of the oldest Provinces of the NAU.
