Darwin is the capital city of the Northern Territory, Australia. Situated on the Timor Sea across from New Guinea, Darwin has a population of 127,500, making it by far the largest and most populated city in the sparsely populated Northern Territory, but the least populous of all Australia's capital cities. It is the smallest and most northerly of the Australian capital cities, and acts as the Top End's regional centre. Founded in 1869 as Palmerston (after a former British Prime Minster), the town was renamed in 1911 for zoologist Charles Darwin. It was the site of Japanese bombing raids in 1942 during World War II, and a famous cyclone on 25 December 1974.
On March 17, 1942, the San Francisco Chronicle reported on the Japanese bombing of Darwin after US General Douglas MacArthur landed there. The Chronicle also reported that the whole town had been evacuated afterwards.
After conquering the Lesser Sunda Islands, the IJN was able to bomb the port city of Darwin, bringing the war home to Australia. Night after night they bombed the port city with no resistance. The USS Boise, which had fled to the city during the collapse of the Dutch East Indies, was eventually forced to leave because of the heavy bombing.
