Darkness Descending (Tor, 2000) is the second book of the Darkness series. Algarve has been victorious on all fronts and conquered Valmiera, Jelgava, Forthweg, and Sibiu. Now Algarve is at war with Unkerlant and seems to be about to win again, in part due to the genocidal practice of using life energies from captive Kaunians. Meanwhile scholars from the island nations of Lagoas and Kuusamo are rushing to discover a new source of magic, one that could change the face of the war.
