Cytherea was the goddess of love in the pantheon of Ancient Lokris. Her temple was the most impressive feature on Fortress Hill in Lakedaimon. Once, there had been a 35-foot gold-and-ivory statue of the goddess inside the temple, but this had been plundered away in one invasion or another. Nevertheless, the temple remained impressive.[1]
Literary comment[]
Cytherea is based on Aphrodite, the love goddess of Ancient Greece, who was born on the island of Cythera. However, the temple and its errant statue are based on those of Athena on the Acropolis of Athens.
