Corliss was a Blondserf in northern Detina. When King Avram proclaimed liberty for all serfs in lands where his army occupied, Corliss and her husband Hagen took their four children and ran for the swamps. Eventually they were found by Captain Cephas' regiment. Cephas hired Hagen as wood-cutter and Corliss as cook for the regiment. So desperate and delighted were the two at having money of their own, they did not realize it was only a fraction of the salary a dark haired Detinan would have received.
