Cooperdale in Southern Victory[]

In mid-1941, General Abner Dowling launched a counter-attack in the direction of Zanesville against the Confederate advance during Operation Blackbeard. It stalled outside Cooperdale, twenty miles north of the objective. Dr. Leonard O'Doull operated in a field aid station in a grove of oak trees a few miles outside the town and a half mile back of the front. When the Confederates broke through the U.S. line, O'Doull and the aid station packed up its tents and loaded them onto trucks to retreat.[1]
