"Clash of Arms" is a fantasy short story written by Harry Turtledove which was first published in New Destinies IV in 1988 and in Departures in 1993.
Initially the story seems to be historical fiction set in medieval Europe and dealing with heraldry, but fantasy elements enter it on the final page.
The story does not state in what year it takes place. In Departures, Turtledove places the story before "Pillar of Cloud, Pillar of Fire" which takes place in 1309. As there is a reference in "Clash" to John of Brittany, Earl of Richmond who received his title in October 1306, that leaves a very narrow window for the story's setting.
