Chugwater is a small town in Wyoming. Its population is so sparse that the town offered to sell lots of land to new residents, provided they built a house on the land within a year and lived in it for two.

Sam Yeager and Barbara Larssen passed through Chugwater while fleeing Chicago with the University's Metallurgical Laboratory after that city fell to the Race. Sam and Barbara were married in Chugwater in a memorably modest ceremony. Jonathan Yeager was conceived there.
Decades later, Sam never stopped loving to retell the story to Jonathan over and over. He loved saying the town's funny name.
