The Chicxulub Asteroid is an informal name for asteroid or other object that struck the Earth 66 million years ago, leaving a crater underneath the Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico, near the communities of Chicxulub Puerto and Chicxulub Pueblo. A widely accepted theory is that worldwide climate disruption from the event was the cause of the Cretaceous–Paleogene extinction event, a mass extinction in which 75% of plant and animal species on Earth became extinct, including all non-avian dinosaurs.

Chicxulub Asteroid in "No Period"[]

A Jewish-American writer contemplated his failed first marriage, and wondered if it might have worked in some alternate timeline. After considering and discarding a number of possibilities, he imagined a world where the Chicxulub asteroid missed Earth, and dinosaurs evolved into sentient beings. He wondered if a male like him would have successfully mated with a female like his ex. He realized that there was no period in which he could save his marriage, so he didn't contemplate the Cambrian Explosion.[1]

Literary Comment[]

Harry Turtledove stated in a Tweet that the Point of Divergence of this series is that the Chicxulub asteroid didn't hit Earth. None of the characters are aware of the near-miss, so it is never mentioned in-universe.

Literary comment[]

Given the nature of Baek Jarns' world, it is almost a certainty that the asteroid missed Earth in this story's Point of Divergence, but Harry Turtledove does not state this clearly.
