Charles Vail was a surgeon in Mound City, Illinois. The Union officers who survived the Battle of Fort Pillow were under his care. This included Mack Leaming and John H. Potter. Leaming and Vail often discussed Potter's condition. Vail finally concluded that Potter, who'd been shot in the head, was entirely in God's hands.[1]
