Cayo Bernardo was one of the many little islands off the coasts of countries in the Caribbean, in this case Cuba, often called cayos in Spanish.

After the United States entered World War II, an American author named Ernest Hemingway went looking for German U-boats in the Carribean, to get his mind off a marital disagreement with his wife.

There off the coast of Cayo Bernardo, he came upon an actual U-boat, which he destroyed by throwing a grenade down its hatch, causing to him to be decorated by President Roosevelt.
