Revision as of 17:34, 29 March 2015

JS the novel is now available for Look Inside at Amazon. From what I can tell, Turtledove did attempt to make novel a worthwhile exercise, and there are certain key differences in the details of the novel. The big one I picked up on is that every election was at least nominally contested from 1944 to 1952, and the GOP did continue to nominate candidates, but Steele's boys rigged the game every time. There are other little things here and there I picked up on as well. Genrikh Yagoda for example, remains Trotsky's head of the NKVD well into the 1950s (in the story it was Beria, which makes little sense), that J. Edgar's ascendancy takes place after Garner is impeached (not summarily executed as in the story) etc. There's also a goodly number of historical figures not previously appearing here, so that category will grow some more.

Now, from my perspective, the novel supersedes the story--but for our the little project here, we do need to acknowledge both. I think the best way to do that is just expand the articles we already have, harmonize them with the novel, and then note any differences in the literary comments. Using some of the above examples, re-write the article about the 1944 election to summarize the version in the novel, and then include a literary note that in the story, it was uncontested. Sounds like a reasonable approach. ML4E (talk) 18:00, March 14, 2015 (UTC)
