I know three is the minimum for most categories but I'm starting to feel like these categories should be held to a higher standard. This is an offshoot of Prominent Families, which was started to keep track of families so large and, well, prominent that their in-laws and cousins were bursting forth from every other page of the series in which they were written. Names like Enos, Driver, Galtier, Semphroch/Grimes, Yeager, more recently joined by Radcliff(e). Families of three or four seem to pale in this company. Hell, you could sustain a whole category if some one-line wonder stumbles across the page and happens to give the names of his wife and son.

If not a minimum number of articles, perhaps we could require a certain number of extended family members, or if there are members representing at least three generations. If a halfway decent geneology can be drawn using only characters with their own articles. Thoughts? We could delve into some of the more questionable categories contained herein and run a few experiments before doing anything rash. Turtle Fan 04:17, 19 February 2009 (UTC)

I see TR's gone ahead and gotten started. What standard are we using? Turtle Fan 23:52, 19 February 2009 (UTC)

I am bumping this up due to MBS creating Category:Confederate Stuarts today. I see there are a slew of sub-cats here with 3 or 4 members (one with only 2) also created by MBS. I think Turtle Fan's comments above have merit and these piddling cats can go. An exception would be for some of the ruling dynastic families we have here. ML4E (talk) 18:46, 27 September 2022 (UTC)
For the record, I have no memory of purging categories in 2009. I suspect I started out with the 3 or less.
TF's idea of 3+ generations has merit, particularly with fictional characters. Simply being related to a POV character doesn't necessarily justify a category in every instance. We didn't restore Irving Morrell's family, even though there are three Morrells.
We should also weigh how many family numbers are prominent characters in their own right, and how many wind up in the minor characters pile. That's usually a good barometer for how "prominent" the family actually is to the given work. I refer back to TF's list of examples from 2009--all families with POV characters, along with important secondary characters. Moreover, their relationships and dramas are prominent plot points.
Conversely, we have categories where the role of the family is at best incidental. For example, the Curtises are Cade, Jimmy, and three redirects to minor family members who only appeared in the closing pages of volume 3 of a trilogy. Aside from Cade adopting Jimmy, the Curtises really have no role. A category is of dubious value. TR (talk) 20:07, 27 September 2022 (UTC)

Trump family[]

I wanted to propose this subcat before I pulled the trigger.  Between "The Terrific Leader" and "Election Day", we're going to have a viable Trump Family subcat of at least 6 entries. In this instance, I think we should put aside our disdain for the hellish clan, and just create it. TR (talk) 16:18, July 2, 2019 (UTC)

It's very important to flag this hellish clan in one place for easy reference and keeping an eye on their misdeeds. Catting the Trumps is a good idea.Matthew Babe Stevenson (talk) 19:52, July 2, 2019 (UTC)
