The Secretary of War was a cabinet position established in 1789, and was responsible for the war department. In 1798, the Department of the Navy was created as a separate department, and the Secretary of War was primarily concerned with the United States Army. In 1949. the War department was abolished, and and the Army and the Navy were recombined to form the Department of Defense.
