These people were American citizens whose primary residences were in the states of Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, or Virginia (minus the sections from which West Virginia was formed) during or immediately before the American Civil War, but who supported the Union in that conflict in either a military or a civilian role. Many did so at great risk to themselves in terms of their social, political, or economic standing in their home communities, and may even have exposed themselves to the risk of violence from their secessionist neighbors. On the other hand, after the Union's victory at the end of the war, several did quite well for themselves by parlaying their having been on the winning side into new opportunities.

Robert E. Lee, who led Confederate forces in OTL, is on this list due to his fictional role in "Lee at the Alamo."

Former slaves who supported the Union should not be included in this category, as they did not enjoy US citizenship in the Antebellum period.
