This category is for monarchs who held the title of King. It is not for monarchs who were emperors, nor for monarchs such as Alardo, Duke of Bari whose monarchical title was of lower than that of king. However, it may include King-Emperors such as Franz Joseph I of Austria, as well as kings who held another, lower regnal title of lower rank. For instance, William I of England was Duke of Normandy at the same time he was King of England, while Gerin the Fox's career as a monarch saw him go from Baron to Prince to King, and exercise the same sovereign claim (albeit over increasingly large areas) at each stage. Likewise, it may include emperors who were concurrently kings in some part of their realms, such as the various Russian tsars (who held the title of King of Poland for a time) and German Emperors (who were also Kings of Prussia).
Also not meant to be included here are monarchs whose ranks are equivalent, but whose titles cannot quite be compared, to that of a king, such as a pope.
