These "people" are characters in William Shakespeare's great play, Hamlet, Prince of Denmark and sometimes of derivative works such as Tom Stoppard's Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead. They play indirect roles in some of Harry Turtledove's writings, notably "We Haven't Got There Yet" and also, to a lesser extent, Ruled Britannia.
Although many of these characters originated from Danish folkloric sources, only Shakespeare's versions are relevant to Turtledove's work.
