These people were the Chairmen (Heads of State) of the short lived Provisional Government of the French Republic. The Provisional Government of the French Republic was an interim government of Free France between 1944 and 1946 following the liberation of continental France after the operations Overlord and Dragoon, and lasted until the establishment of the French Fourth Republic. Its establishment marked the official restoration and re-establishment of a provisional French Republic assuring continuity with the defunct French Third Republic.

As it was a short lived government, there were only four different chairman. The only Harry Turtledove work that uses the office of the Chairman is The Man With the Iron Heart, where Charles de Gaulle appears to hold the office into 1947, rather than resigning in 1946.
