It became a large and rich city and a major power in the Mediterranean Sea. The resulting rivalry with Syracuse and Rome was accompanied by several wars with respective invasions of each other's homeland. Hannibal's invasion of Italy in the Second Punic War culminated in the Carthaginian victory at Cannae and led to a serious threat to the continuation of Roman rule over Italy; however, Carthage emerged from the conflict at its historical weakest. Although Carthage was later rebuilt, Tunis grew to be the bigger city, and Carthage was considered its suburb. In 1985, the mayor of the current Carthage signed a "peace treaty" with the mayor of Rome after it was determined that the Punic Wars had never formally ended.

In the 2090s, rogue Crosstimers established a slave-trade in an alternate where Spain was divided between Basques and the descendants of colonists from Carthage, and technology never progressed beyond the Iron Age. Emishtar was such a person. Annette Klein was taken by the traders to this alternate. She was eventually able to escape and alert the home timeline.
