The Carolina Parakeet (Conuropsis carolinensis) was the only parrot species native to the eastern United States. It was found from Southern New England and New York to the Gulf of Mexico, and lived in old forests along rivers and swamps. It was the only species at the time classified in the genus Conuropsis.
The last wild specimen was killed in Okeechobee County, Florida in 1904, and the last captive bird (a male named Incas) died at the Cincinnati Zoo on February 21, 1918 - coincidentally in the same aviary in which the last passenger pigeon, "Martha," had died in 1914. It was not until 1939, however, that the species was formally declared extinct.

The Carolina Parakeet was one of the birds that Fred O'Neill magicked to Fernwood during a Yule Bird Count competition with Lucy Parker. Up to this point, both witches had attracted birds through space only which took relatively little magic. O'Neill upped the stakes by attracting the bird through both time and space, a much more difficult feat of magic.
Lucy and Jesse Parker couldn't identify the bird until they came across a painting by John James Audubon in a reference book.
