Canton in Southern Victory[]
In mid-1941, a U.S. troop train was bombed near Canton preventing general Abner Dowling from reinforcing his counter-attack against Operation Blackbeard from Bucyrus. The attack caused heavy casualties and having antiaircraft guns on flatcars included did little to defend the train.[1]
In 1942, during Operation Coalscuttle, the U.S. Army regrouped in Canton and launched a counter-attack toward Confederate forces in Akron. This attack proved unsuccessful.
