Camp Humble was a concentration camp near Humble, Texas. It was built in late 1943 to replace Camp Determination as the primary concentration camp of Jake Featherston's Population Reduction. Like Camp Determination, it was commanded by Jefferson Pinkard.
Unlike Camp Determination and other extermination camps and earlier concentration camps, Camp Humble had a crematorium built to dispose of the thousands of bodies of blacks killed by the expanded gas chambers. The company that built those chambers had done a poor job. The smell of burning flesh was quite pungent around the camp and the town. Nor did the crematorium burn bodies as completely as promised.
Pinkard and his second-in-command, Vern Green, were arrested at Camp Humble when Texas declared itself an independent republic in 1944 and joined the war on the side of the United States.
