While attempting to study a Hidden Folk artifact in the Crab Nebula, Rupert Smith, commander of the Erthumoi ship Inside Straight, encounters a Samian ship behaving erratically. He and his ship's computer soon realize that they and the Samians have been drawn into a booby trap, and must deduce a way out.
