"Avalon" is the second of three novellas by Harry Turtledove, which appeared in the 2007 collection Opening Atlantis. It tells the tale of the last stand of a gang of 17th-century pirates who had made the seaport of Avalon, on the west coast of Atlantis, their primary stronghold. The POV characters are Red Rodney Radcliffe, a powerful pirate captain, and William Radcliff, a law-abiding merchant who is Rodney's distant cousin. Rodney rallies all pirates in the region together, while William is appointed Admiral of an international fleet. The two forces hurdle toward the decisive battle.
