Aristocles was the personal slave of General Publius Quinctilius Varus. An educated man, Aristocles was proud of his connection to the great governor, and had no particular desire to be free, although Varus' will included a provision for Aristocles' manumission. Master and slave enjoyed each other's company and came close to seeming as equals, often discussing matters like the literary merits of Plato's dialogues.
