Apsychia is a congenital disease characterized by the lack of a soul. Someone born apsychic has no possibility of an afterlife, thus no fear of condemnation or hope of eternal bliss. Notable apsychics throughout history have included great artists and composers, determined to make their marks on Earth, in the only life they will ever have. Conversely, an individual's apsychia can have negative effects on society at large. It is often reported (but never confirmed) that the Leader of Alemania during the Second Sorcerous War was apsychic, and thus committed his brutal acts without fear of postmortem punishment.

In 1993, a notorious rash of apsychic births occurred in the Angels City region of the Golden Province within the Confederated Provinces.
