António de Oliveira Salazar (28 April 1889 – 27 July 1970) served as the Prime Minister of Portugal from 1932 to 1968. In 1932, he founded and led the Estado Novo ("New State"), the authoritarian, right-wing government that presided over and controlled Portugal's social, economic, cultural and political life until 1974, outliving its founder by four years. From 1932 through 1968, Salazar held the office of Prime Minister of Portugal. In addition, he held several cabinet positions at various times, and served as the interim president of Portugal in 1951.
While Salazar formally opposed both Communism and Fascism, his regime had some mildly fascistic elements. Nevertheless, civil rights and economic freedom in his Portugal were mildly better than in truly fascist nations such as Francisco Franco's Spain or Benito Mussolini's Italy, to say nothing of Adolf Hitler's Germany.
António de Oliveira Salazar in The Man With the Iron Heart[]
Prime Minister António de Oliveira Salazar kept Portugal neutral throughout World War II. After the war, Portugal did prove a relative safe harbor for Nazis fleeing Germany, although not as attractive as Francisco Franco's Spain.[1]
In 1947, members of the German Freedom Front hijacked a passenger plane in Lisbon.[2] The Salazar government made few efforts to storm the plane or rescue the hostages.[3]
António de Oliveira Salazar in The War That Came Early[]
After the death of José Sanjurjo in the Fall of 1943 and the collapse of the Spanish Nationalist cause, General António de Oliveira Salazar allowed various Nationalist commanders to take refuge in Portugal.[4]
