The Annals are a multi-volume history written by the Roman Senator Tacitus (AD 56-c. 125) between AD 110 and 120, detailing the reigns of the Emperors Tiberius, Caligula, Claudius, and Nero. About two-thirds of the Annals volumes have survived to the present era.
The Annals in Ruled Britannia
The Annals include the story of Queen Boudicca of the Iceni who led a revolt against the Roman rulers of Britain before being suppressed by Gaius Suetonius Paulinus.
In 1597, William Shakespeare purchased an English translation of the Annals from Harry Seymour to use as a source in his writing of Boudicca. On 4 January 1598, Christopher Marlowe presented Shakespeare with a much finer copy of the Annals, in the original Latin.
