Anastas Mouradian was a Soviet bomber pilot who served in the war between Germany and the USSR. An outspoken Armenian in the politically paranoid, Russian-dominated USSR, he was often warned by his friend Sergei Yaroslavsky to keep quiet, and often regretted saying things in the presence of possible political informers.
Mouradian served as Yaroslavsky's co-pilot from 1938 to 1940, when he was transferred to Far Eastern Aviation in 1940 to fly in the war against Japanese, which was desperate enough to that the Soviet Air Force was using seasoned co-pilots to fly largely untested planes. He remained on this front for six months, before he was moved to the west when the USSR and Japan concluded a peace.
